Quotes

I love movies! There is nothing like getting engrossed in an engaging story. I confess that my trips to the cinema have got less, but I have made up for it in online streaming!

If you know me, you will be aware that the film that kick started my love of ‘the big screen’ was the 1977 original Star Wars. As an eight-year-old, I was blown away by this spectacular space adventure!

There was so much to enjoy, and it even had a quote that became very popular… ‘May the Force be with you.’  You could get that on badges, mugs and Tee-shirts.

There are a few films that have quotes that are famous, here are a few of my favourites:

  • ‘There's no place like home.’ – The Wizard of Oz (1939)

  • ‘I'm the king of the world!’ – Titanic (1997)

  • ‘I'll be back.’ – The Terminator (1984)

  • ‘You're gonna need a bigger boat.’ – Jaws (1975)

  • ‘Here's looking at you, kid.’ – Casablanca (1942)

What is your favourite quote from a movie?

The things Jesus said are quotable too. Many Christians seek to memorise them, as they are a source of great encouragement.

Recently I was reading in the book of Matthew, in the Bible, the bit when Jesus was about to be handed over to the Romans to be tried, tortured and put to death on a cross. In His anguish Jesus cried out to Father God…

…he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
— Matthew 27:39 The NIV Bible

Jesus knew what was ahead. As He wrestled with this, He asked if it was possible to avoid it – His humanity is so tangible here!

But, what is remarkable is how Jesus resolved this prayer, He said: ‘Yet not as I will, but as you will’.

In other words, he put aside what He wanted for the sake of what Father God was after. This plan was far bigger and significant, with far reaching effects – just read on in the New Testament!

Jesus led by example, and at great personal cost to himself. I am humbled and very grateful when I reflect on this.

I am also deeply challenged. In all I do in my life, do I have the same outlook as Jesus. Do I trust that what Father God has instore for me, may be bigger and more significant than I can see?

Do I have the faith and trust in God to yield and say, ‘Yet not as I will, but as you will’. If Jesus did it, can I, and can you?

God bless you :)
