Filled

I love autumn, it is my favourite season! There’s nothing like walking on a carpet of golden and red leaves and smelling the fresh autumn air.

This autumnal canvas is a dramatic reminder that life goes through seasons. I think we all agreed that this ‘coronavirus season’ is one which none of us would have chosen, and that it has been, and continues to be tough. I have continually gone back to God to find strength, comfort and hope!

This week I read the Old Testament prophet Joel. He spoke at a time when Israel had rejected His ways and were facing devastation. Their world had changed and God spoke a word of hope about their future...

And afterwards, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
— Joel 2:28-29 The NIV Bible

As I reflected on this ancient ‘prophecy’, I was reminded that it was fulfilled and it continues to be fulfilled!

Firstly, this passage is quoted in the New Testament, after Jesus death and resurrection when those first Disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, at what is called Pentecost.

Secondly, it is still happening today. All over the world people are being filled, and refilled, with the Holy Spirit. God said, ‘I will pour out my Spirit’ and He continues to do just that - God keeps His promises!

For me, being filled with the Holy Spirit is incredible. It’s like upgrading from a small black & white to a 4K 70inch widescreen colour television.

As we move through autumn and into winter, there may well be more tough days ahead. But, be encouraged, God is still at work and he has promised to pour out His Spirit, have you been filled or is it time for a refill?
