Undignified

Have you ever seen somebody, after a few drinks, dancing like they just don’t care? Well this week I read about King David in the Bible who danced just like this! The story is found in 2 Samuel 6 as David and the Israelites processed the Ark of the Covenant (Yes, the one in the film ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’) to Jerusalem. The Bible says that David danced before the Lord with all his might! As they entered the city David’s wife Michal (daughter of King Saul) saw him and she was not amused. When she challenged him about it, David replied...

It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel - I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.
— 2 Samuel 6:21-22 The NIV Bible

The word undignified means ‘to appear foolish and unseemly; lacking in dignity’. Michal thought that this was improper for the King of Israel. However, David had a different perspective. He chose to put God first, and so was unashamed to humble himself in order to worship God, even if that meant looking ‘foolish’ before people. David was a remarkable King. He wasn’t perfect, but here we see a man who was prepared to put God first despite what other may think. That’s a powerful lesson to learn and live out. Are you willing to put God first in your life? That may mean having to humble yourself and be undignified?
