New glasses

I recently got some new glasses. It was four years since my last new pair, so it took a few days for my eyes to adjust to the (stronger) prescription.

Once I got used to them, life seemed different, in fact, better! Those things I was struggling to see and make out are now clear and sharp.

As I was reflecting on my new clarity it reminded of a ‘post-easter’ story in the Bible about the resurrected Jesus before he returned to heaven.

After Jesus had been crucified two of his followers left Jerusalem low and downcast, heading towards a place called Emmaus. On their journey they met a stranger and they talked with him about all they had witnessed and how their hopes in Jesus were now over…

He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
— Luke 24:25-27 The NIV Bible

This stranger turned out to be the risen Jesus. The story goes on to say that as they shared a meal together, they ‘saw’ that it was Jesus – alive and well! They were shocked and delighted. Full of joy they ran back to the other Disciples in Jerusalem and told them all about it.

They said to each other, “It felt like a fire burning in us when Jesus talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us.” Jesus helped them to see and understand the Bible, and that it all points to Him! Jesus helped them to really see...a true revelation!

It’s a bit like me wearing my new glasses: the right prescription really helps and makes things clear!

I believe that Jesus is the right prescription for everyone! He has brought me clarity and understanding, not only when I read the Bible, but in the whole of life.  I can say that with Him life is better. So, let me encourage you to discover your own ‘Jesus glasses’.
