Facing the Fire

The Old Testament book of Daniel tells of how he and other young men were taken from Israel to Babylon after it was conquered around 586BC. They were immersed and trained in Babylonian culture so that they could be in the King’s service. Three such men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood out, and yet they stayed faithful to the God of Israel. When King Nebuchadnezzar built an image in his own honour a decree was issued that all should bow down to it or be cast into a fiery furnace. These three men refused, and when challenged they replied...

King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.
— Daniel 3:16-18 The NIV Bible

These three men defied the king’s edict! Their conviction and faith in God was so solid that they would not yield. They believed that God could save them. What I find even more remarkable is when they said that even if God did not save them, they would still not bow the knee! What was it in them that made them take this stand? Recently my dear friend, who has suffered with MND for many years, quoted this section of the Bible when praying. He could have been so bitter or angry with God, instead he was grateful and positive. What is it in him that makes him take this stand too?

I believe it’s the powerful presence of God inside that makes all the difference. God promises to dwell in each one who trusts and follows Him. It’s His presence that changes perspectives and priorities. Faith becomes real and that’s powerful!
