Peace on Earth
How are your preparations for Christmas coming along? Have you ordered the turkey, sent your cards and wrapped the presents?
Are you still looking for that ‘special gift’ for someone? Perhaps you don’t even start shopping until next week? We buy a lot of things online. It’s become the norm for many to do present shopping from their bed, bathroom or even walking the dog!
It is always a frantic time. The clock is ticking, which is highlighted as you munch your way through the advent calendar chocolates.
Even though its busy, I love the run up to Christmas. Every year I look for that moment when suddenly I ‘feel’ Christmassy! It often happens when we put the (real) tree up and the smell of it permeates the house.
I also read and reflect on the Nativity story, seeing the various strands coming together ahead of the birth of Jesus.
The shepherds, part of the narrative, out on the hills around Bethlehem were told about the birth of Jesus by one, and then a company of angels, who said...
This short verse is known as ‘Gloria in Excelsis Duo’ which is Latin for ‘Glory to God in the highest’, and it’s also been called ‘The Hymn of the Angels’.
‘Peace on earth’ – sounds wonderful doesn’t it! I’m sure we would all like a little bit of peace this Christmastime! Especially this year, as there is a growing sense of uncertainty about the effects of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The ‘peace’ that the angels spoke of is not a calm tranquillity, it’s something more that comes from the very heart of God.
This is a deep kind of peace. It’s peace of mind, peace of soul and peace with God. The birth of Jesus opened up a way for you and me to be at peace with God.
In my experience this peace does not mean an absence of troubles or hardship, but an internal, genuine knowing of God’s love, presence, and blessing.
The Bible says that everyone can receive it by believing that Jesus is the Son of God and submitting to Him. May you discover God’s favour this Christmas.
