Nobody’s perfect

A few weeks ago, I said that the greatest King Israel ever had was David. The Bible says he was ‘a man after God’s own heart’ and after his death he became the plumb line to which all future kings of Israel were measured against. However, even this ‘great’ Biblical hero was not perfect...

For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not failed to keep any of the LORD’s commands all the days of his life - except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.
— 1 Kings 15:5 The NIV Bible

This little verse reminds us of David’s humanity. Uriah’s wife was Bathsheba, and while he was off fighting in the king’s army, David slept with her and she became pregnant by him. To try and ‘fix’ the situation David brought Uriah back from the frontline and hoped he would pop home to sleep with his wife! Uriah didn’t, so David manipulated the fighting which got Uriah killed! God was not happy with what David did and there were consequences. The good news is David repented and God forgave. So even David, the greatest king Israel ever had was not perfect - he needed God’s forgiveness. This is true for all of humanity. No matter how good or righteous we think we are, the bottom line is, none of us are perfect! Good news: there is a God out there who knows and wants to help...
