Higher Power

Coldplay are back! Their new single is a poppy dance track called ‘Higher Power’. I saw it last week as they performed the song on a barge, on the River Thames, in front of the O2 Arena, in East London as part of the Brit Awards.

I have to say, I liked it. The chorus is really catchy, as lead singer, Chris Martin, belts out the words, ‘You have a higher power’.

When he was asked about the meaning behind the lyrics, the singer said, ‘The song is about trying to find the astronaut in all of us, the person that can do amazing things.’

I thought, do we all possess this ‘astronaut’ that Chris Martin refers to? Or is the ‘higher power’ something beyond ourselves?

It reminded me of something in the Bible that Paul, who started many churches in the New Testament, prayed for the church in the city of Ephesus (located in modern day Turkey)...

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.
— Ephesians 3:16-17 The NIV Bible

In my experience, I have seen that my own resources are limited. I can set myself goals, of which some I can achieve, and yet other things do seem to be beyond me. I’m aware of my failings and weaknesses. I need that ‘higher power’.

This prayer in the Bible implies that the ‘higher power’ does not come from within us. Instead, it is God, the Holy Spirit, who helps and changes us from the inside out.

There are many stories of this in the Bible. I have seen people in our church change by the Holy Spirit, and it has also happened in my own life too. God, the Holy Spirt is the ‘higher power’!
