Come to me
This week I have been reading Matthew. The author of this eye-witness account of Jesus’ life was a former tax collector who became one of Jesus’ original Disciples! In Chapter 11 Jesus talked about John the Baptist, who came in advance of him, and was not like the other religious leaders. Then at the end of that chapter referring to himself, Jesus declared…
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Jesus spoke of a new (and better) way to live – with him at the centre! Much of what he said was counter to the other religious leaders of the day. Jesus spoke about a relationship and not religion. His invitation was to be with him, to watch him and to learn from him. Jesus would not force anyone but instead offered ‘unforced rhythms of grace’. Are you tired, worn out or burned out on religion? Come to Jesus and learn to live freely and lightly today!
